Common Course Numbering Project

The Common Course Numbering (CCN) Project is a state-mandated initiative (AB 1111) that will create common course numbers for comparable courses across all community colleges in the state. Its aim is to facilitate smoother transfers to four-year institutions, and reduce unnecessary credit accumulation.

Peralta is in the process of transitioning courses to the common course numbering system. This new system will use the following structure:

  • Subject Prefix: Four letter abbreviation, e.g., ENGL for English
  • Course Type Identifier: C = Common Course Number, local courses would not have a `C’
  • Course Number: Standardized 4-digit course identification
  • Course Specialty Identifier: Letter after 4-digit course identification used to indicate specific type of course, e.g., `E’ indicates a course with embedded support.

If you have questions about how the transition to the common course numbering system might affect you, you can ask a counselor:

Faculty Resources

Each course that transitions to the common course numbering system must match a CCN template that specifies (among other things) what that course’s number, title, description, requisites, content, and objectives must be.

ASCCC page on CCN – Give your input into what the CCN templates that are currently under development should say.
